COMPETITIVE SQUADS

Cheltenham & Gloucester Gymnastics Club has a range of squads representing the club, county, and region at local and national competitions.

Who/what we are looking for:

Being a part of a gymnastics squad requires a great deal of hard work. When selecting potential candidates, our coaches are looking for the following attributes:

  • A passion for gymnastics

  • Patience and perseverance

  • Physical strength and flexibility

  • Positive attitude

  • Confidence

  • Willingness to learn

  • Supportive team player

What squad training is like:

Squad gymnastics training is still fun. However, your child will now be encouraged to challenge themselves and work on completing skills with good technique rather than simply achieving them.

Physical preparation is very important for squad athletes and every session includes conditioning work in order to prepare the body for more difficult skills and prevent injuries.

Gymnasts train several days a week and our coaches prepare a programme which includes enough rest time for the body to recover for the next training session. For this reason, it is very unlikely that the club will consider squad candidates who wish to continue taking part in other after school physical activities as well as pursuing gymnastics at a competitive level.

How to tryout for a space in a squad:

The club offers opportunities for members to gain a space in a squad through tryout sessions. Squad tryouts are only open to CGGC members, however, we can consider applicants moving to the area with a recommendation from their current coach.

If you are a current CGGC member, you will be notified when the next round of squad tryouts are being held. In order to gain a space in a squad, you must attend one of our squad tryout sessions and be offered a trial period.

If you are not yet a CGGC member and wish to try out for a space in one of our squads, you will first need to join our recreational programme and wait for the next round of squad trouts.

Squad tryouts allow us to assess gymnastics ability, however, we get to know each gymnast during recreational classes. Our competitive squads require commitment, self-motivation and a positive attitude and recreational classes offer the perfect environment to showcase these qualities on a regular basis.

Please keep in mind that the older a gymnast is, the more challenging it becomes to meet the criteria for joining one of our squads. This is because our competition bodies set specific minimum skill and routine requirements for each age group in our competitive squads.

What gymnastics disciplines we offer:

Alongside our popular recreational programme, the club offers the following disciplines as competition pathways...

WOMEN'S ARTISTIC GYMNASTICS (WAG)

Women's Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) is one of the most captivating and technically demanding gymnastic disciplines. Evolving from traditional gymnastics, WAG showcases routines on apparatus like the vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor. This discipline highlights strength, flexibility, and artistry, drawing a large and passionate following worldwide.

TUMBLING GYMNASTICS (TUM)

Tumbling is a thrilling and high-energy gymnastic discipline that emphasizes speed, power, and precision. Originating from traditional acrobatics, it involves performing a series of flips, twists, and somersaults on a straight runway. This explosive discipline captivates audiences and attracts a growing number of athletes worldwide.

AEROBIC GYMNASTICS (AER)

Aerobic Gymnastics is perhaps the most dynamic and energetic of all the gymnastic disciplines. Finding its roots in the group fitness and aerobic classes of the late 80’s, Aerobic Gymnastics is a recent addition to the stable of gymnastic disciplines and boasts a growing number of enthusiasts throughout the UK.
